The Procession One of the most beautiful of all Costa Rican pageants awaits you in
festive Samara Beach on Saturday, July 14th. The highlight of Samara's
Annual Celebrations during the July Veranillo, 'Little Summer', is the grand
procession at sea in praise of the 'Virgen del Mar'.
Dozens of boats, decorated with palm branches and tropical flowers and with
pennants streaming in the breeze, sail slowly and magically from one end of
the majestic 6-kilometre-long bay to the other.
The boats are filled with the families of fishermen and other villagers of
this coastal community who pay reverential homage to the Virgen del Mar, who
protects the fisherman from storms and accidents at sea.
Her statue, adorned in the multi-colored raiment of the patroness, is
conveyed in the lead boat, which makes a complete circuit of Samara bay to
bless all who voyage miles beyond the coral reef to gather in their nets the
produce of the sea.
